Question 1

Rental Housing Supply

What specific steps would you take as mayor to support the development of more purpose-built rental housing in your municipality during the next term?

Guelph needs more purpose-built rental housing to give residents greater choice and help people find a home at different stages of life. As Mayor, I would focus on making Guelph a more predictable place to build. That means identifying appropriate areas for rental growth, particularly along major corridors and in serviced areas, improving coordination between planning, engineering and building services, and addressing unnecessary delays in the approvals process. I would also work with housing providers, non-profits and senior governments to identify barriers preventing viable rental projects from moving forward. Municipal incentives should be targeted, transparent and tied to clear public benefits. At the same time, we need to ensure new housing is coordinated with the water, wastewater, transportation and community infrastructure required to support it.
